While many martial art-related concepts are new and unfamiliar to the general public, one basic fact that most people seem to know is the karate belt colors. It is widespread knowledge that the belt colors correspond to a specific mastery and skill level of the athlete. This means that a white belt is way different from a black belt. If you are fighting one, do not expect to experience the same kind of offense and defense from the other. In such a case, there are other colors that also have their individual skill levels, much so that many end up confusing them all.

If you happen to be a beginner in the field of karate and you would like to gauge your abilities and achievements, it is important to know about this since you may be on your way to progressing more in the future.

In such a case, it would only be right for you to learn each of them so that you know what to benchmark for during your learning. If you do not know where to learn about them, no need to worry. We have listed a couple of them that you may be able to encounter during your journey in karate.

  • The White Belt

This specific color is worn by beginners. Symbolized as the color of birth, there is no doubt why it was chosen to be the preliminary choice for those just starting out their journey in karate. Now, while it may seem discouraging to wear this belt at first, always remember that even black belters started out as white belters during their early stages of learning. Be patient and wear this color with honor. If you work hard enough and are diligent in your training, it may only take you around six to nine months before you may proceed towards a higher level of teachings.

  • The Green Belt

After going through the first few belts of training, you have finally learned and mastered the basics. You have perfected the first few lessons, hence, why you may already wear the green belt. This color symbolizes growth. You are just coming out of your shell, and you are finally ready to face more challenges, harder than your beginner lessons. Be sure to keep going and never look back. Wearing this and continuing your training would usually take 10 to 12 months.

  • The Black Belt

After going through more training and colored belts, this is the ultimate goal! You have mastered the basics and intermediate lessons; now it is time to face the hardest challenge of them all. You started out small, with little to no knowledge of the arts; now, you have karate as your formidable defensive and offensive technique. But make no mistake, your learning hasn’t ended yet. The color black symbolizes the darkness beyond the sun, and your new mission is to seek a deeper understanding of the art.

Conclusion

Knowing these belt colors may seem trivial at first, but the truth is that each of them symbolizes the different stages of learning that you would have to go through in order to master the art of karate. We haven’t even mentioned the other colors in between: yellow, orange, blue, purple, brown, and red.

Nonetheless, they also represent the different skill levels that a martial artist would have to go through to hone their craft until they can deflect any challenges put right in front of them. Be sure to familiarize yourself with them all, and feel free to sign up for a karate class if you think you are up for it.
