WHAT IS WOMEN’S SELF-DEFENSE?
Self-Defense is a set of awareness, assertiveness, verbal confrontation skills, safety strategies, and physical techniques that enable someone to successfully prevent, escape, resist, and survive violent assaults. Pride Martial Arts Academy’s courses empower women through psychological awareness and verbal skills, as well as, teaching physical techniques to aid them in the event of an attack. The Buffalo based, mixed martial arts academy’s mission is, “creating a safer community, one family at a time.”
DOES SELF-DEFENSE WORK?
Although participating in a women’s self-defense seminar does not guarantee your safety, it absolutely increases your options and allows you to prepare responses to avoid, slow down, de-escalate, or interrupt an attack. According to RAINN, (https://www.rainn.org/statistics/scope-problem) every 98 seconds another American is sexually assaulted. This leads to 1 out of every 6 American women to be a victim of an attempted or completed sexual assault. According to the National Crime Victimization Survey, the leading reliable source (https://www.bjs.gov/index.cfm?ty=pbdetail&iid=5366), these assaults are conducted 55% of the time, at or near, a victim’s home. Martial arts training and empowering women through self-defense is not only essential, but could also be life-saving. Statistics show, that women who have defended themselves against an initial threat, have been 80% more successful in interrupting an assault from occurring!
MUST I TRAIN FOR YEARS, TO LEARN TO DEFEND MYSELF?
The answer is NO! A basic course can offer enough concepts and skills to help you develop self-protection strategies that you can continue to build upon. The skills and techniques do not require years to perfect. Certainly, practice is important and investing the time to review and perfect your skills can help build confidence and increase your abilities in protecting yourself during an assault or home invasion. The key is to make a commitment to participate in your own safety and to do what is necessary to reduce risk and become empowered to act, rather than to be acted upon!
